River Enbourne

In 1086 Ecchinswell was known as Eccleswelle, where ‘welle’ meant ‘a well, stream, spring’. The village lies in the shallow valley through which the fast running, chalk River Enbourne flows.

The village pond is in the middle of the village, on the site of the old village pound. The Parish Council is responsible for maintaining the pond and the surrounding area, which is cut regularly as part of the village maintenance schedule. The pond is home to the Great Crested Newt, among other wildlife, and there is a seat by the side away from the road, where people can sit and enjoy the peace of the area.
The pond has recently been invaded by Azolla Filiculoides, an invasive fern; details of the action the Parish Council is taking to deal with this problem can be found on the News page.
The Parish Council actually has little information on the history of the pond so if anyone knows more about it please contact the Parish Clerk.
